Truck Pull-20,000 lbs X 80'
It was pretty cold outside and I had the video camera ready for Philip to go. He had the climbing shoes on and was all set to go, then they told me I was up because they were going to take weight out of the truck for the lightweights. So I had about 60 seconds to change shoes and go. Not prepared, and I need to practive the truck pull. Last place, not sure on time, over 50 seconds.
Farmers (285)/Yoke(700) medley
Nice rain and hail filled event. Decent traction despite the ground being soaked. Stopped raining during my run so that was nice. Dropped the yoke for some reason(wussed out I guess) and it cost me, took 2nd in this event by about 2 seconds.
Tire Flip (1000 lbs for 1 flip)/Sled(600) X80'
Last minute change from an 800 lbs tire for 80 to the big boy for just 1 flip. Pete Konradt commented he did the tire for sets of 5 and it is VERY tough. Everyone used gorilla grip here, but I had none. I lifted the tire and my chalk slipped off, I rechalked and flipped it. Pulled the sled in a little over 20 sec. but wasn't enough to make up, all the other heavies got it over the first time. Last place here again.
12" Log for Max
So I was feeling pretty bad. Sitting in second to last place after three events and my legs felt like jello. The log was very slick and we were lifting on turf which was very spongy, and it definatly took something out of my leg drive. So I opened light at 235 and easily made it. Most of the heavies were struggling and it was clear everyones legs were somewhere between the sled and the truck pull. The way it was shapping up I jumped in at 255. Another easy lift. Then the way it shaped up 285 would gaurantee me 2nd place so I called for it. Again another very easy lift. The winnder hit 285 on his second, so I took 2nd place here. Really screwed myself out of first by messing around with the 235. Oh well...
Loading Medley
(250 keg/250 sandbag/250 field stone/250 atlas stone/315 sandbag/315 atlas stone)
They changed up the order of competitors going into the final event and I was in 5th place. Through the lighweights and the masters and the heavies before me no one had loaded the last 2 implements. I knew I needed a win here to have a chance at placing. So I did what I needed and loaded them all, time in 40-45 I think something seconds. Held up for first.
This resulted in a three-way tie for first, so the winner had won 2 events, and I had won 1 event. So I took home 2nd place and qualified for nationals. Which was the goal. Next time more truck pull practice and I should win outright.

Truck Pull (15,000-18,000 pounds for 80')
ReplyDeleteWell I was actually looking forward to the truck pull. I had never done it before but I thought I had pretty strong legs compared to my competition. I was wrong. I was first to go for the LW's and I pulled a very hard, very slow 55 seconds. At the time I wondered how many guys would finish. The answer was all of them and all in around 30 some seconds. I got blown away. And the worst part was my body was destoyed. Totally exhausted! I didn't understand how big of a toll a truck pull plays on your body. Even mentally I was gone. I could only hope I would make up some ground on the next event.
Farmers/Yoke (245/600 80'each)
The promoter pulled a last minute switch of the order. The LW's who had just went where now going to go first, and I was up. Of course it just started raining again so I wiped the handles, chalked up, and gave it hell. The Farmers was no problem and I'm guessing I made it down in about 10 seconds. I took a short breath and took off with the yoke. I flew for about 60' then had to set it down. I took another short breath and finished the course in about 35 seconds which ended up being the best time.
Tire/Sled Drag (850/475 80')
I was first to go again. I felt good about the tire but wasn't sure about the sled drag since I had never done it before. The whistle blew and as I started to flip the tire I slipped and fell right on my face. I quickly got up and had two good flips. I ran over to the sled and had to get all the slack out of the chain which cost my about 3 seconds. I had a slow pull, slipped a couple more times and finished in about 50 seconds. Another last place. It wasn't looking good.
Max Log
After the last event my whole right quad just cramped up. I limped into the building to foam roll but when I laid down I had whole body cramps. So I drank water and walked around for a while. I was happy to find that I didn't have to go first for this event. It was 10 pound jumps starting at 185 pounds. I waited until 225 for my first attempt which, to my surprise, was what the rest of the LW's did for their second attempt. I then did 245 after watching one LW miss it and the over barley get it. I smoked it. Now, no one had told me I had won since I had still had an attempt left. So, I did 255 as good as I had ever done it and took first in that event. Pretty sure I could of hit 275 without too much of a problem, but wouldn't of even tired 255 if I would of known I didn't have to. But I was very happy with the result. So after four events I had two firsts and two lasts which somehow put me in first place. But barely...
Odd Object load
Since I was in first I got to go last in this event. So I just had to beat whoever did the most objects. When it was my turn only one person had loaded four objects. I thought I could do it faster and maybe even load all six objects. I blew throw the 250 keg, 250 sand bag, 250 field stone, and the 250 atlas stone in maybe 20-25 seconds. I felt like it was fast enough to win but knew if I loaded one more object I would seal it. I took a big breath, squatted down, bear hugged the 300 pound sandbag and attempted a front squat. Dumb idea. I had no quads left at all. I then tried to tilt and lap it but was out of gas. I could only hope that my time was fast enough.
Results
I was confident but still nervous. As they began to announce the names I hoped they waited to call mine. They did and I had won the contest! Thanks Colin for all the advice and motivation. I can't say enough about MVB.
Awesome job, 2 firsts basically! Must be something in the air over there are MVB!!
